Volume 1 - Chapter 1 Part 1
Chapter 1 - Part 1
|| 7 Years Later ||
And now.
Hayato was not in the countryside surrounded by mountains, but in front of a large building in the city. It took him a few hours by car to get here.
[It’s huge!]
Hayato let out a sigh in front of the school that he’d be attending.
The new school he moved into was a three-story concrete reinforced structure that was much larger than the fragile wooden structure in the countryside that it almost made his eyes roll in disbelief.
He couldn’t help but to feel nostalgic.
Not wanting to remain overwhelmed, he pulled his-self together and headed for the administration office.
After completing the procedure for his transfer, his homeroom teacher guided him to his new classroom. The word “1-A” was written on a plate in front of a room. This seemed to be Hayato’s classroom as of today.
As soon as he opened the door, he felt a stab from his interested classmates. His shoulder shook nervously for a moment.
I was nervous of course. There are more students in a single class than it was in the countryside.
[H-hello, I’m Ki-Kirishima Hayato. I’m from Tsukinose. I’m just a boy from a place where you can find monkeys, deer, and boars on the road. I’d be grateful if you could tell me various things here.]
It was such a self-deprecating self-introduction. It was not a big deal, but it’s a kind of introduction that makes people giggle approvingly.
In fact, it was a self-introduction that he had practiced lots of times over the past few days.
(Thank god)
Hayato breathed out a sigh of relief at the positive response of his classmates at his new school.
Even though he was moving from the countryside to the city, it was only halfway through June. Anyone would be anxious if they were to be in Hayato’s spot.
But still, there were some reasons that made him excited.
He’s moving to the same town as Haruki, the person he made a promise to when he was a child. He was hoping that he could meet her again. In Hayato’s mind, he can clearly imagine him smiling, just like 7 years ago.
[For your seat… Is that an empty seat next to you, Nikaido?]
[Nikaido… eh?]
[Yes]
One of the girls raised her hand and told him to sit on the seat next to her.
She was a very beautiful girl.
She has big, round eyes and long, well-groomed hair that’s braided in tufts on each side. The way she smiles to everyone is as lovely as a bud blossoming. She was a neat and pretty girl who fit the word “Yamato Nadeshiko”, which means “mature” in Japanese. (TN: Yamato Nadeshiko can also be interpreted as “a perfect representation of a woman” in Japanese.)
Hayato was taken aback by her appearance. In Tsukinose, she rarely saw a girl as beautiful as her. At that moment, something crossed his mind.
[Hmm, This girl also has the name “Nikaido”, just like him...]
And then, the image of an old friend got portrayed inside Hayato’s mind.
(If he had been in the same class as this girl, he might have been annoyed with you and said something like, “I guess I’m doomed to have the same family name as yours”)
When that kind of thought crossed Hayato’s mind, it made him chuckle for a bit.
[I’ll be in your care, Nikaido-san]
In response to Hayato’s greeting, Nikaido-san blinked her eyes and looked a little puzzled. She responded with a mischievous smile that was somewhat friendly.
[Please take care of me as well, Kirishima-kun]
(Eh?)
When she narrowed her eyes, Hayato felt nostalgic for some reason.
(Hm, why did I feel nostalgic?)
That feeling makes Hayato tilt his head, but his new classmates started to approach him
[Hey, Kirishima-kun. Are the things that you said in your self-introduction true?]
[Seriously, how many deer and monkeys are there on the road?]
[How did you end up coming here from such a place?]
As soon as the short homeroom was over, Hayato was surrounded by his classmates and was receiving barrages of questions.
[Hmmm, I changed schools due to my father’s sudden job transfer. Yes, I used to live in Tsukinose, deep in the mountains where there were only 4 buses every day, and there were more livestock than the amount of people living there. To be honest, I’m surprised that I’ve never been interacting with anyone but chickens and sheep]
When Hayato shrugged his shoulders and said something like that, responses such as [What the hell is that?], [Are you serious?], and [That’s funny!] were heard.
Hayato found that this kind of atmosphere is nice… He felt relieved and sighed to his classmates' reaction, at the same time, he wondered if he had the talent for this kind of thing.
[Did you have a girlfriend there?]
[It’s hard to find someone your own age, let alone a girlfriend.]
[Then how about friends? What did you do to spend your time?]
[Hmm, basically it was just me playing games alone or helping out in the fields. Ah, but there was one person, who I was really close with. He used to jump into the river with me from the bridge, climb the trees in the mountains and fall when he couldn’t get down. Oh well, I guess he was more like a wild monkey or a demon rather than a friend.]
Hayato was talking about his memories with his former best friend, Haruki.
If anything, the only memories he had was that time when he was being dragged and pushed around.
I’m not sure if that could be considered as a good memory. However, it was certainly a fun memory for Hayato.
Then...
Snap!
[Eh?]
[Ah...]
At the same time Hayato was talking, He heard the sound of something being snapped next to him. Everyone immediately turned their heads in that direction.
The source of the sound was Nikaido-san, who was sitting right next to Hayato.
In her hand, Hayato saw a mechanical pencil that had snapped off.
The person herself was surprised.
A beautiful, innocent girl who looks like a Yamato Nadeshiko and a broken mechanical pencil. The combination between the two is not easy to understand. And it’s not surprising, that everyone’s attention, including Hayato’s, is more concerned with Nikaido-san rather than the broken mechanical pencil.
[Nikaido… san?]
[Uhm, that… What happened?]
[Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?]
[Ahaha, I’m fine. It seems like this pencil was a bit defective]
She tossed the broken pencil and tried to change the conversation topic. With an awkward look on her face, she turns her eyes to Hayato as if she had a slight disapproval of his previous statement.
[That’s indeed a way to talk about your precious friend.]
[Haha, he’s a precious friend, that’s why]
[Hmmm, is that so?]
Hayato answered Haruki’s question with his own way of thinking.
She then turned her head away with a pout.
