Prologue

It was an evening at the end of summer.

It was a time when they innocently believed that all the fun things would last forever

[You’re moving?]

[Yes, to a very faraway place]

[But, we still can play together, right?]

[I… I don’t know...]

Deep in the mountains, an old shrine building is used as a secret base for the two children to play in.

The two confused children look down at each other and shake their heads, trying to hold their tears.

Both of them are so young that they have yet to understand what that means. But they do understand that a terrible farewell awaits them.

Their minds were messed up, and indescribable emotions ran through their bodies. Burning their chests and emotions.

He’s an important friend after all.

In a depopulated village, there were very few children. He and his sister played together with her everyday, and she never doubted that they would be together, even in the future.  

That’s why He tried to resist reality. But it’s futile, and resisting will not affect any decision.

He entangled his pinkies in her hands and entangled it. The girl looks confused.

But she can’t help but to follow the boy’s action.

[Haruki, Both of us…. Are going to be friends… Forever...]

[Y-Yeah! Both of us… Even though we’re far apart… Are friends!]

That’s the little promise we made.

Intertwining their little pinkies, their promise were witnessed by the blooming hollyhock on the wall,  the empty ramune bottle that has been drunk, and the sound of the cicadas chirping. (TN: Ramune)

Faced with an inevitable parting, both of them were hoping to see each other again.
Then, the two of them force themselves to smile.

[I’m going now]

[Ok, Have a safe trip!]

In the end, they never said goodbye to each other.

That was a story from 7 years ago.
